The purchase

What it means

The arithmetic, not the advice

The price tag isn’t the real cost of a financed purchase: the monthly payment’s claim on your income is. And for a cash purchase, the real cost is measured in what it does to the safety net behind it, not the number on the receipt.

  • A purchase that passes these numbers can still be the wrong call, and one that fails them can still be right in context, like a laptop needed for the job that pays for it. This checks the arithmetic, not your life.
  • Re-run it even when you’re confident. A “yes” you can point to is worth more than a feeling, and a “caution” is worth knowing before you commit.

Worth knowing

Same idea as the emergency fund calculator

The cash-purchase check here uses the same months-of-expenses idea as the emergency fund calculator.

Common mistake

Comparing the payment to one good month

Use a typical month’s income, not the best one you’ve had recently.
